Ronit Strum

Since 2002 I have worked in stone, glass and Venetian gold, cut by hand in my studio in Ra’anana.

Before mosaic

For years I worked in graphic design and advertising. Composition and colour were my daily work.

Then my family lived abroad for five years, and there I met mosaic. The connection was instant, almost magnetic. I kept the designer’s eye and changed the material.

Venice, then sculpture

I wanted to learn the medium where it is still made, so I trained in Venice, at Orsoni, in smalti and gold.

Back in Israel I studied at the Beit Berl art school, the Midrasha, in a personal programme focused on sculpture. That is why many of my works leave the wall.

I am still learning, with international masters and at symposia in Clauiano, Italy, and Adana, Türkiye.

Classical, then contemporary

Each work is a new question about the medium. I move between functional and artistic, classical and contemporary, colour and black-and-white, flat and three-dimensional.

A piece starts with an idea. Then I photograph, choose the materials and look for the right way to make this particular work.

I love the thinking and planning stage, then the joining of materials, stone to stone, glass to glass, until the whole is built. It is a fascinating, joyful, meditative process.

The studio

Every work is made here, on HaAgam Street. The shelves are full of glass, smalti and stone. I also teach here, weekly classes for adults and workshops for groups.
